Recycling In LLH FAQs

Where do I take my recycling?

  • There are large bins for recycling at The Point. Corrugated cardboard should be flattened and place in the bins marked for cardboard. All other recyclable materials can be co-mingled (regardless of any labels on the bins) for single-stream recycling.
  • Please refer to the Recycling Information Signs in the recycling area to see what items can and cannot be put in the bins.

What can go in the main recycling bin?

  • Paper: Office paper, newspaper, magazines, junk mail, boxes, and cartons.
  • Metal: All cans. Please empty, rinse and shake dry. It is good practice to place the food can lid inside the can and squeeze the top slightly to keep anyone from getting cut by the lid.
  • Glass: Food bottles and jars. Please empty, rinse and shake dry.
  • Plastic: Bottles, tubs, jugs and jars. No pumps. Please empty, rinse and shake dry.

Can plastic bottle caps and food container lids be recycled?

  • Bottle caps may either be placed back on the bottle or thrown in trash. Food tub lids usually do not have a recycle symbol♻️. Unless it does, throw it in the trash.

I have Styrofoam with a recycle symbol on it. Can I recycle it?

  • Republic Services does not take Styrofoam. Put it in the trash.

Can I recycle shredded paper?

  • Shredded paper jams the sorting machinery. Please put it in the trash.

I keep my items to recycled in a plastic bag. Can I throw the filled bag in the bin?

  • Plastic bags and films of any kind are banned from the bin. Empty the bag and take it with you to fill again.

What should I do with pizza boxes?

  • If the box is free of food or grease contamination it can go in the cardboard recycling bin. If contaminated, put it in the trash.

What can I do with used batteries and electronics?

    • Ordinary household batteries are not recycled locally and should go in the trash. Rechargeable batteries can be taken to the Avery County Electronics Recycling, every second and fourth Saturday, 9 am-2 pm, 269 Old Vale Rd, Newland, behind the Board of Education Complex.
